Mud wasps — also called mud daubers or potter wasps — are one of Queensland's most common insect nuisances. They build mud tube nests on sheltered exterior surfaces: eaves, soffits, wall crevices, window frames, under pergolas and on porch ceilings. The nests bond firmly to painted surfaces, render and timber. When the wasps vacate, the dried nest and mud staining remains. Left untreated, the residue permanently stains paint and render. Queensland's warm, humid climate is ideal for mud wasps year-round. The most common species in SEQ are attracted to sheltered vertical surfaces protected from rain and wind — exactly what eaves, soffits and wall crevices provide. Properties with unpainted or lightly painted eaves, older render and rough masonry are particularly attractive nesting sites.
After a mud wasp nest vacates, a mud shadow typically remains on the paint or render beneath. On light-coloured surfaces this is especially visible. On render, the mud penetrates the texture and resists hosing. On painted timber, the mud can lift and stain the paint surface if not treated correctly.
As part of our house wash service, we treat mud wasp staining with an appropriate alkaline cleaner that softens the mud residue, then rinse at low pressure suitable for the surface. For render and painted timber, low-pressure is essential — high pressure risks damage.
