Weatherboard houses — whether traditional painted timber, fibre cement or modern weatherboard profiles — are one of the most common property types in Redlands and across South East Queensland, and they're also among the most sensitive to cleaning damage. Mould, algae and lichen establish readily on weatherboard surfaces, particularly in shaded positions, on south-facing walls and on homes surrounded by mature trees. The challenge is that weatherboard can be damaged by high-pressure washing — boards can split at joins, water can be forced behind the cladding into the wall cavity, and paint can be lifted on older homes. Soft washing is specifically suited to weatherboard — low pressure that cleans without any mechanical risk to the cladding.
Painted timber weatherboard is porous and naturally absorbs moisture. In Queensland's humid climate, this moisture provides an ideal surface for algae and mould to establish. High-pressure washing on weatherboard risks splitting board joins, particularly on older timber where the wood has dried and contracted over decades. Water forced at high pressure behind cladding can penetrate the wall cavity, causing internal moisture damage and mould that's far more serious than the surface growth you started with. Painted surfaces can also be lifted by high pressure, especially on heritage homes with multiple layers of old paint.
